What Happens When You Block a Number on Android?
The phone usually declines the call automatically, but Android does not provide one universal experience for the caller. Ringing, voicemail, history, and messages depend on the Phone app, carrier, and blocking method.
What the caller experiences
Android does not send a standard notification saying “you were blocked.” The caller may hear a short ring, be sent to voicemail, hear a carrier message, or simply experience a declined call. Those signals are not proof of blocking because the same things happen when a phone is off, busy, unreachable, or using Do Not Disturb.
What you see
Phone by Google says calls received while a number is blocked do not appear in its call history. Other dialers and call-screening apps may keep a blocked-call record. Block Unknown Callers stores its own local history for calls it blocks or silences.
What happens to voicemail
Google says blocked callers cannot leave voicemail when supported visual voicemail is on. Samsung notes that voicemail blocking may require carrier assistance. In practice, a rejected call can still reach carrier voicemail on some combinations.
Does blocking also block text messages?
That depends on the app used to block the number. A combined Phone/Messages product may coordinate call and message blocking. Block Unknown Callers does not process SMS, RCS, OTPs, WhatsApp, Telegram, or other messages at all. Its call rule has no effect on them.
Can the person call from another number?
Yes. Per-number blocking applies to the displayed number. A caller can use another line, hide caller ID, or spoof a different number. To stop the broader pattern, use spam protection or block/silence every number outside Contacts.
Specific number versus every non-contact
| Goal | Best tool |
|---|---|
| Block one known number | Phone app block list |
| Block hidden caller ID | Built-in Unknown/private setting |
| Block all numbers outside Contacts | Call-screening rule |
| Identify suspicious businesses | Caller ID/spam database |
If voicemail is the concern, read why blocked calls may still reach voicemail.

Frequently asked questions
Does Android tell someone that I blocked them?
Android does not send a standard notification saying they were blocked. The caller's ringing or voicemail experience varies and is not reliable proof.
Do blocked calls go straight to voicemail?
They may, depending on the Phone app, visual voicemail, and carrier. Some supported setups prevent blocked callers from leaving voicemail.
Will I see a blocked call in my history?
Phone by Google may omit it from call history, while other dialers or screening apps may keep a local blocked-call record.
Does Block Unknown Callers block text messages too?
No. It does not read, block, allow, or affect SMS, RCS, OTPs, or messaging apps.
Can a blocked caller use another number?
Yes. Per-number blocking does not stop another displayed or spoofed number. A non-contact rule is broader.
