How to Block Calls Not in Contacts on Samsung Galaxy

Samsung Galaxy phones offer several call-protection settings, but their names and behavior vary by model, carrier, country, and One UI version. Here is how to find the right option—and what to use when your phone only blocks private numbers.

Start with Samsung's Phone app. On current supported models, Samsung documents a Block calls from unknown numbers switch that can cover numbers not saved in contacts or identified by Smart Call. On other Galaxy versions, a similarly named option may focus on hidden or private caller ID instead. Test the setting with an unsaved number before assuming it blocks every non-contact.

Try Samsung's built-in setting first

  1. Open the Phone app.
  2. Tap More options (three dots), then Settings.
  3. Open Block numbers.
  4. Turn on the option for unknown numbers, if your model provides it.
  5. Call the phone from a visible number that is not saved in Contacts and confirm the result.

Samsung notes that the feature is not available on every model, and Smart Call availability can also depend on the carrier. Menu wording can therefore differ even between two Galaxy phones.

Turn on Smart Call for known spam

Where supported, go to Phone → Settings → Caller ID and spam protection. Smart Call can label suspected spam and fraud, and some versions let you block all identified spam or only high-risk scams. This is database-based protection: it targets numbers Samsung's service recognizes, not necessarily every unsaved number.

If unsaved numbers still ring

If your Galaxy only blocks hidden/private calls, or the built-in switch is missing, use Android's call-screening role. Block Unknown Callers applies one local rule: numbers not saved in Contacts can be blocked or silenced. It requires no account and does not request Contacts permission.

  1. Install Block Unknown Callers.
  2. Accept Android's prompt to make it the call-screening app.
  3. Select Block to reject non-contacts or Silence to mute them.
  4. Test with an unsaved number.

Keep delivery, clinic, and work calls reachable

Important: Samsung menus and carrier behavior change over time. Use the instructions for your exact model, and remember that call blocking does not guarantee that a caller cannot reach carrier voicemail.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Samsung Galaxy block every number not in Contacts?

Some current Galaxy models document a switch that blocks numbers not saved in Contacts or identified by Smart Call. Availability and wording vary by model, carrier, country, and One UI version, so test with an unsaved visible number.

Why do calls still ring after I enable Block unknown numbers?

On some Android and Galaxy versions, unknown means hidden or private caller ID rather than every unsaved number. Smart Call may also allow a visible number that is not in its spam database.

Does Block Unknown Callers need Contacts permission?

No. It uses Android's call-screening role and does not request Contacts permission or upload your address book.

How can I allow a delivery or hospital call?

Save the number, add it to the allow list, enable repeat-call bypass, or temporarily pause filtering while you wait.

Will blocked Samsung calls go to voicemail?

They may. Voicemail handling depends on the Phone app, visual voicemail, and the carrier, so blocking the ring on the device does not always block carrier voicemail.
